Owen-Ames-Kimball (O-A-K), a Fort Myers-based construction contracting and management company, has hired Rick Mercer as project manager.

Mercer has over 2Rick Mercer5 years of experience in the construction industry serving in previous roles as construction engineer, land development director, operations manager and most recently as director of construction for all 171 of Florida’s State Parks from Pensacola to Key West. Mercer has a degree in Civil Engineering, is a Florida Certified General Contractor and has served in the role of guest-professor for college level courses on community development. As development director, Mercer has led multi-discipline professional teams in the design, permitting and construction of heavy-civil site infrastructure and vertical construction projects ranging in size from small commercial sites to $100 million master planned communities. Mercer also has experience in commercial land acquisition, land management, and as a prior business owner, provided consulting services to financial institutions related to real estate asset portfolio management.

Owen-Ames-Kimball Company’s Abel Natali and Matthew Zwack appointed to Board of Directors

Owen-Ames-Kimball Company (O-A-K) announces the appointment of Abel Natali and Matthew Zwack to the O-A-K Florida, Inc., Board of Directors.

Abel Natali

Natali graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science degree in finance and business administration from the University of Florida. He joined O-A-K in 2006 as a job site superintendent on the Marco Marriott Resort and Spa $52 million renovation. Natali excelled in the fast-paced, multi-year Marco Marriott project and was promoted to assistant project manager at that projects end. He currently serves as project manager for O-A-K. He is a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Accredited Professional through the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) and was a part of the team that LEED certified the first elementary school in Florida.

Matt Zwack

Zwack joined the company in 2005 as an assistant superintendent and has completed many projects for O-A-K as a job site superintendent on both public and private projects. He currently serves as chief safety officer and general superintendent for O-A-K. Zwack is a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Accredited Professional certified Building Design and Construction.

Owen-Ames-Kimball supports Southwest Florida & Lee County Fair with donation to benefit 4-H and FFA programs

The Owen-Ames-Kimball (OAK) Company is proud to support the upcoming 92nd annual Southwest Florida & Lee County Fair taking place from Feb. 25 to March 6, 2016. OAK is funding the purchase of 20 new animal pens that will enhance the safety of the animals and 4-H and Future Farmers of America (FFA) members.

Every year, hundreds of 4-H and FFA members attend the fair to showcase their livestock that they have raised during the year. Darren Watkins is a job site superintendent at Thomas Marine Construction, a sister company of OAK, and has served on the Livestock Committee of the Fair Association for the past five years. Exhibitors can enter Beef Breeding, Goats, Horses, Steer, Swine and Small Animals, with many entering more than one category. Watkins mentions that the members’ product knowledge is tested throughout the competitions and shows, thus, reinforcing the many “life skills” they are learning in their 4-H and FFA programs, and preparing them to be our leaders of the future. The fair is our opportunity for participants to showcase their hard work and allow them to shine in the community. OAK is honored to support Watkins and this great organization and event.

Owen-Ames-Kimball hires Glenn Burnett as superintendent

Owen-Ames-Kimball (OAK), a Fort Myers-based construction contracting and management company, has hired Glenn Burnett as superintendent.

Burnett began his long construction industry history in 1985, working as a laborer and then lead foreman for a construction company in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He went on to be a self-employed subcontractor for his own company, Burnett’s General Contracting, Inc., a company that is still active today. In 2006, he also took on additional work as a structural inspector in the city of Cape Coral, inspecting all aspects of residential and commercial builds for code compliance as well as engineering design compliance.

Owen-Ames-Kimball earns Best Commercial Contractors Project at Lee BIA Summit 2015 Awards

Owen-Ames-Kimball (OAK) Company was recently recognized at the 2015 Lee BIA Summit Awards for Best Commercial Contractors Project for the 2014-2015 year. Lee BIA Summit honored the company for its outstanding level of success and professionalism in commercial building, planning and design of the Waterman Broadcasting studio expansion project.

The project included an 8,000-square-foot tilt-wall addition to the existing studio facility and demolition of the old studio space and atrium. Interior improvements included a renovated lobby with new staircase and elevator, a new studio, an open-plan newsroom, edit booths, a new videographers’ office, green rooms, office space, an employee break room and restrooms. The project also included improved power, HVAC and fire suppression systems and a renovation of the former studio space for production and marketing staff. The work was completed as Waterman Broadcasting continued its normal business operations.

“Owen-Ames-Kimball delivered the new studio on-time, despite the extreme challenges of working around our television production schedule,” said Steve Pontius, executive vice president and general manager of Waterman Broadcasting. “They worked with their subcontractors to accommodate our needs, sometimes working overnight, and ensured every deadline was met.”

Now open, Alico Family Golf is designed for all ages and offers programs for serious golfers, as well as new and returning golfers. Owen-Ames-Kimball Company breaks ground on Alico Family Golf Center

OAK Alico groundbreakingOwen-Ames-Kimball Company has begun construction of Alico Family Golf Center, a new 30-acre, state-of-the-art golf center that will include a 5,000-square-foot clubhouse, a sports cafe, 18 skillful holes of miniature golf, a PGA teaching school, 72 grass tee boxes, shaded practice areas, and an extensive short game area, all coupled with cooling misting machines throughout the property. Located at 16300 Lee Rd. in Fort Myers, the Alico Family Golf center is designed for all ages, and will include programs and practice areas for serious golfers, as well as new and returning players.

“Alico Family Golf Center will be a great asset to Southwest Florida as a family-friendly destination for tourists as well as for golfers,” said David J. Local PGA professionals Jim St. Germain and Kraig Feighery paired up with investors to create the region’s first PGA golf learning center. The center will utilize the Start New at Golf or S.N.A.G. program to teach both young children and adults how to play, or how to return to the game of golf. In addition, Alico Family Golf Center will offer a unique location for corporate gatherings, summer and after-school camps and other special events and activities.

According to a report by the Florida Golf Impact Task Force, Florida’s golf courses, stand-alone ranges and miniature golf facilities brought in an estimated $3.4 billion in revenue to the state.

“Florida is the No. 1 golfing destination in the U.S. and Alico Family Golf Centers will be a major economic driving force as a tourist destination as well as a local destination for golf enthusiasts in Southwest Florida,” said Feighery.

In addition to O-A-K, project partners include Sheeley Architects, Morris-Depew Associates, BB&T and Independent Development Services Corporation (IDS, Corporation). The project is scheduled for completion by January 2014.

Owen-Ames-Kimball’s Steven G. Richards named president of the Lee Building Industry Association

Owen-Ames-Kimball Company (O-A-K) announces that vice president Steven G. Richards has been elected president of the Lee Building Industry Association (Lee BIA) for the year 2013. The Lee BIA is comprised of more than 300 area builders, contractors, designers and industry businesses. Previously, Richards served as first vice president and on its board of directors.

Richards has been with O-A-K since 1993, working first as a project manager then as a full-time estimator. He was promoted to vice president and to serving on the O-A-K board of directors in 2004. He also serves his community as a United Way campaign coordinator and on its Allocations Committee as well as for the Greater Fort Myers Chamber of Commerce on its Education Grants Committee.

Richards holds an Associate of Arts degree in Civil Engineering and a Bachelor of Science degree in Construction Technology from Purdue University.

Owen-Ames-Kimball wins Lee BIA Summit Award for LEED project

Owen-Ames-Kimball Company (O-A-K) was presented with the Commercial Contractor Summit Award for Best LEED Certified Project during the Lee Building Industry Association (BIA) annual awards held Saturday, Oct. 20. The award was for the Archbold Biological Station Lodge and Learning Center project in Venus, Fla. The awards are presented annually and recognize projects which have achieved a high level of success in five categories – Quality of Construction, Challenges, Timeliness of Completion, Client Satisfaction and Unique Safety Requirements Performed. In this award category, an additional area is considered – Adherence to LEED Standards.

The Lodge and Learning Center achieved the highest level of LEED certification, Platinum level, from the U.S. Green Building Council. It is one of only 12 LEED Platinum commercial buildings in Florida. The project construction included traditional means of saving energy with porches, large eaves, fans, breezeways, rainwater harvesting and harnessing natural daylight in addition to new technologies such as highly efficient air conditioning with programmable area/room zones. The project was constructed on an environmentally sensitive, state historic site which is also on the National Register of Historic Places and is designated as a National Natural Landmark.

The O-A-K project team was led by Tom Misotti, LEED AP BD & C, project manager. Jay Zwack and Gene Carr were the job site superintendents, and Frank Bell supported the project as general superintendent.
