Pure Florida introduces “Pure Pink” weekend retreat Oct. 9-11 to benefit American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer

Double Sunshine

The statistics are alarming: one in eight women will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of her lifetime. To support breast cancer patients, survivors and their loved ones and in recognition of breast cancer awareness month, Pure Florida will host a “Pure Pink” weekend retreat Friday, Oct. 9 through Sunday, Oct. 11.

The three-day retreat is open to the public and benefits the American Cancer Society’s “Making Strides Against Breast Cancer” program. Packages are available for $200 per person and include a two-night stay on Friday, Oct. 9 and Saturday, Oct. 10 at the Residence Inn Naples.

The retreat begins on Friday, Oct. 9 with a silent auction at the Residence Inn Naples from 7-10 p.m. On Saturday, guests will enjoy complimentary breakfast at Residence Inn Naples, followed by a 90-minute dolphin cruise aboard Pure Florida’s M/V Double Sunshine in Naples. On Saturday evening, guests will be transported to a dinner theater performance at Broadway Palm Theatre. The weekend retreat will conclude Sunday morning with brunch at The Cider Press Café. The “Pure Pink” package also includes hotel shuttle transportation and discount shopping at the historic Tin City. All of the proceeds go to the American Cancer Society’s “Making Strides Against Breast Cancer” program. Participants are encouraged to wear pink throughout the two-day event. Reservations can be made by calling Steven Györkös at 239-659-2309 or sgyorkos@csmcorp.net.

For the Julian family, owners of Pure Florida, the cause is a personal one. The Julian’s friend and colleague, Barb Frederick, is currently undergoing treatment for breast cancer. The Julian’s first met Frederick on the set of the television show “Survivor” where they all worked on various elements of the reality show’s production. The Julian family recently recruited Frederick to join Pure Florida’s production company, Pure Image Productions.

“As a breast cancer patient, ‘Making Strides Against Breast Cancer’ is very near and dear to my heart. I understand the shock of receiving the diagnosis, the pain of treatment and the flood of emotions that it brings,” said Frederick, vice-president of development for Pure Image Productions. “One day I was having an especially rough day at work and Lance Julian encouraged me to take my lunch aboard the M/V Double Sunshine. At that moment, I finally took time to exhale and to enjoy the dolphins, birds and other wildlife from aboard the cruise – a much needed break during a difficult time. I am eternally grateful for the support that I have received from the Julian’s and my Pure Florida family. I hope that the Pure Pink retreat not only raises dollars for support, but brings a greater level of awareness and a feeling of community support to other breast cancer patients and their friends and families.”

All proceeds will go to the “Making Strides Against Breast Cancer” program at American Cancer Society to finish the fight against breast cancer by funding groundbreaking breast cancer research, educating and supporting those affected by breast cancer and encouraging people to take steps to reduce the risk of developing breast cancer.

The American Cancer Society is helping to save more than 490 lives a day through its commitment to research, education, developing legislation, prevention and early detection. Pure Florida offers marine science field trips for students, organizations

Pure Florida Cruise

Pure Florida now offers marine science cruises for school groups and other organizations to provide students with hands-on learning aboard the Naples-based M/V Double Sunshine and the Fort Myers-based M/V Explorer. The cruises offer activities that encourage teamwork and critical thinking as students experience and learn about marine biology, environmental science, local history and the importance of preserving Southwest Florida’s waterways.

The 1.5 hour marine science cruises navigate local waterways and the Gulf of Mexico, showcasing the Southwest Florida ecosystem and native wildlife. Aboard the narrated cruises, children explore the Southwest Florida environment and participate in STEM-based science experiments including water testing for salinity levels, pH, nitrate, ammonia and phosphate levels. Engineering challenges are also available including “float your boat” and “submersibles” that allow students to apply scientific principles to their engineering designs and builds.

In addition, schools and groups may choose to have a Pure Florida educator visit the classroom in advance of the field trip to review the scientific method and best practices in preparation for the cruise.

Pure Florida recently hosted its inaugural marine science cruise on July 18, featuring a narrated tour, sightseeing scavenger hunt and a science show. Aboard Pure Florida’s Naples-based M/V Double Sunshine, children had the opportunity to explore the waters and enjoy a special presentation by Glen Beitmen, the “Science Guy,” on “The Wonders of Water.” During the presentation, Beitmen showed the audience how to make polymer slime and educated the children about the properties of water. The humorous performance shared information about the waters and helped children connect the information to their tour cruise experience.

“Educating children about our ecosystem is essential and it is an important part of what we do here at Pure Florida,” said Captain Harry Julian, co-founder of Pure Florida. “We are grateful for the opportunity to reach out to future generations and play a role in helping children establish an appreciation for the beautiful Southwest Florida environment.”

For pricing and more information on the science cruises or other Pure Florida experiences, call 239-793-7529 or visit www.PureFL.com.
