Prior to his appointment at Cypress Lake Country Club, Pontes was the head golf professional at the Links Course at Hammock Dunes, where he expanded several clinic programs at this nationally recognized Tom Fazio-designed championship course and mentored staff members through their PGA Class A status, a designation for golf professionals who have passed the appropriate PGA abilities and orientation tests. Pontes has held the PGA Class A status since January of 2008.

Pontes’ passion for golf and athletics began in his youth. Considered as a stand out three-sport athlete, he was offered college scholarships in soccer, basketball and baseball. Shortly after, Pontes moved to Florida to pursue his calling in golf.

At the Ocean Hammock Golf Club in Palm Coast, Pontes started his golf career as an assistant golf professional where he worked many events including the U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links Championship, won by Michelle Wie, in 2003. His passion for the game then took him to the Creek Course at Hammock Dunes, a Rees Jones-designed championship course, where he managed club tournaments and events, trained employees, and conducted lessons as an assistant golf professional, then became the head golf professional in 2006.

“Dan’s background and knowledge in golf operations make him the perfect fit to serve as head golf professional for Cypress Lake Country Club members,” said Ed Rodgers, general manager of Cypress Lake Country Club.

In addition to golf, Pontes enjoys landscaping and fishing, and spending time with his wife and two young children.

Major enhancements are underway to the 18-hole championship golf course at Cypress Lake Country Club, creating an expanded, state-of-the-art practice facility. Recent upgrades include the expansion of the golf course practice tee to more than two and one-half times its previous size, from 22,000 square feet to 55,000 square feet. The practice area renovation is part of a five-year capital improvement effort by Cypress Lake Country Club to further improve amenities and services for members. “We continue to invest in new amenities for our members, which few clubs are doing these days,” said Rodgers.

This summer the club will begin to renovate the remainder of the practice area by relocating some of the target greens and creating new ones in order to provide a better visual practice experience for golfers. An improved drainage system will be installed as part of the scope of work for this portion of the project.
